Survey: What Will It Take to Make Buildings More Energy Efficient?
на 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 31, 2012Commissioned by the Global Buildings Performance Network, the report emerged from a survey of real estate and construction executives in the European Union, India, China and the U.S.
It offered promising news: The right policy signals could unleash an international boom in energy efficiency.
What motivates these professionals? Not surprisingly, it’s the potential they see to cut costs. They “are ready to go deep and are waiting for the right policy signals that can scale up energy efficiency in the sector,” said GBPN in the report.
Although barriers exist, business leaders in building and real estate already are pursuing a range of efficiency measures. The survey found that:
Energy usage is important for most of the companies and is key factor in investment decisions to 63 percent of those surveyed. Companies that describe themselves as “financially successful” rated energy particularly high.Lighting retrofits scored high among actions companies are taking. About 57 percent are replacing lighting , 50 percent HVAC systems and 50 percent building insulation.Forty percent are reconfiguring building layout to take advantage of natural light.Energy efficiency is a risk management tool for 69 percent, a sign that they have a sophisticated understanding of energy.
Not all of the news was good, however. Companies are unaware of the actual costs of their energy use. Less than a third have commissioned energy audits for their buildings. Further, two thirds of those surveyed overestimate the cost of energy efficient construction.
A surprising 75 percent saw benefit in energy regulation and described lack of enforcement as a problem. The solution? Not too much carrot and not too much stick, concluded the survey report.
“While the survey shows that most companies prefer carrots, at some point governments also need to wield the stick,” the report said. “Striking the right balance between incentives and restrictions is not easy. Excessive red tape and mixed messages are costly to business and slow the adoption of more efficient technologies. The market needs clear long-term signals, rational expectations and opportunities for a reasonable return on investment.”
The Economist Intelligence Unit surveyed 423 senior executives from the real estate and construction industries in the summer 2012. About 27 percent of those surveyed came from the US, 24 percent from the European Union, 25 percent from China and 24 percent from India. All of those surveyed worked in operations, strategy or finance. More than half were C-level executives or above and nearly half from businesses with more than $500 million in global annual revenue. Poll: What takes to make buildings more energy efficient?
на 7:00 AM Friday, October 26, 2012The report emerged from a survey of real estate and construction managers in the European Union, India, China, and the United States on behalf of global building performance network,.
It offered promising news: the right policy signals could unleash an international boom in the area of energy efficiency.
What motivates these professionals? It is not surprising, it is the potential that they see, to reduce costs. You "are ready to go deep and waiting for the right policy signals that can scale in terms of energy efficiency," GBPN said in the report.
Although there are barriers, business leaders in construction and real estate already pursue a series of measures to increase efficiency. The survey found that:
Energy consumption is important for most businesses and key factor for investment decisions to 63 percent of the respondents. Describe companies that particularly highly rated themselves as "financially successful" with energy.Achieved highly under actions companies take lighting retrofits. About 57 percent are lighting, HVAC systems by 50% and 50% building insulation replace.Forty percent are building layout natural light use Neukonfiguration.Energieeffizienz is a risk management tool for 69 percent, a sign that they have a sophisticated understanding of energy.
Not all of the news was good, however. Companies are deliberately not the actual cost of their energy consumption. Energy audits gave less than a third of their building in order. Two-thirds of the respondents overestimated the cost of energy-efficient and sustainable construction further.
A surprising 75 percent saw use energy regulation and described lack of enforcement as a problem. The solution? Not too much carrot and not too much stick closed the survey report.
"While the survey shows that most companies of prefer carrots, must at some point Governments also stick to swing", according to the report. "The right balance between incentives and constraints is not easy." Excessive bureaucracy and mixed messages are expensive and slow the introduction of more efficient technologies for businesses. "The market needs clear, long-term signals, rational expectations and opportunities for a reasonable return on investment."

Olympic Games in London go for green energy efficient design
на 12:30 PM Friday, August 03, 2012The velodrome - one of the iconic and sustainable buildings ever built for an Olympic Games - contains the indoor cycling track. It was built, around 6,000 people keep and keep cool this summer with a completely natural ventilation system with outside air. That's right - no air conditioning required. In addition the velodrome natural light uses during the day to complement fluorescent lamps, save a lot of energy. Did we mention that it collects rainwater for its most important water consumption with the slanted roof? Well versed in fact. For the history of the power blog to read.

Consumers to Save with New Energy Efficient Washers and Dishwashers
на 12:30 PM Tuesday, May 29, 2012Credit: Dennis Schroeder/NREL
The Department of Energy on May 16 announced energy efficiency standards for residential clothes washers and dishwashers that are expected to save consumers $20 billion in energy and water costs. The clothes washers standard will save households approximately $350 apiece over the lifetime of the appliances. And home dishwashers will use approximately 15% less energy and more than 20% less water, directly providing consumers with savings on monthly bills.
Today, clothes washers and dishwashers account for approximately 3% of residential energy use and more than 20% of indoor water use in U.S. homes. The new standards for clothes washers will reduce the energy consumption of front-loading clothes washers by 15% and reduce water consumption by 35%, while the standards will reduce energy consumption by top-loading washers by 33% and reduce water consumption by 19%. The new standards—developed in partnership with companies such as Whirlpool, General Electric, and LG Electronics, industry advocates, national environmental organizations, consumer groups, and other stakeholders—build on previous minimum energy efficiency requirements for clothes washers and dishwashers. They go into effect starting in 2015 and 2013, respectively. The announcement is the most recent in a series of efficiency standards made by the Obama Administration that have covered nearly 40 different products, and will together save consumers nearly $350 billion on their energy bills through 2030. See the DOE press release and the Building Technologies Program website.

Not a Long Time Ago in an Energy Efficient Galaxy
на 5:09 PM Wednesday, March 14, 2012A manufacturer of crystalline solar cells has opened a new manufacturing facility for the assembly of solar panels by plant staff and robots in Milwaukee as a result of American Recovery and Recovery Act funds from the DOE's State Energy Program (SEP).
Helios USA, LLC, is Wisconsin's first manufacturer of high-performance solar modules for deployment in residential, commercial, industrial, and utility-based solar electric systems. The company will supply solar panels to a number of customers.
With a $1.4 million loan from SEP, Helios assembles solar panels in the newly opened facility, located in what was previously an abandoned manufacturing plant in the Menomonee Valley area of Milwaukee, with the help of staff and assistance from robots when “superhuman” precision and sensitivity is needed. As of December 2011, the Helios manufacturing plant has supported 26 jobs, and it is projected to create a total of 50 permanent jobs in the state. Read the complete story in DOE's Energy Blog.
