Biomass cogeneration facility opens at the site of Ministry of energy

Saturday, April 28, 2012

This is an excerpt from EERE network news, a weekly electronic newsletter.

The Department of energy and Ameresco, Inc. marks the successful operational launch of a new $ 795 million biomass-powered cogeneration plant at DOE's Savannah River site (SRS) in Aiken, South Carolina, on 12 March. The 20-megawatt project an estimated 800 jobs created, and if it is full, the plant will employ 25 full time jobs locally and supports the logging of the local community. The facility replaces a deterioration and inefficient 1950s years era coal power plant and oil fired boiler and is estimated at 944 million dollars in savings in fuel costs in the next 20 years and generate costs for operation and maintenance. Biomass, consisting of local forest residue and wood chips, and bio-fuels are the primary source of energy for the tech renewable energy facility, which burn the capacity annually has residue 385,000 tons forest. The projects "renewable" the 2012 renewable energy World Excellence was also in renewable energy Awardfor biomass project of the year. SRS dedicated a DOE's industrial complex environment key management and cleanup to nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship and nuclear materials disposition in support of U.S. nuclear non-proliferation efforts.

The project is also the largest renewable energy savings performance of specific contract (ESPC) in U.S. history. DOE 20 years fixed price with Ameresco, a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy companies in 2009 to fund, design contract one, construct, operate, maintain and fuel pump the new biomass website. ESPCs are contracts in which private companies, finance, install and wait new and water energy-efficient equipment for federal facilities. The Government pays no up-front, and the company investment in the course of time by the Agency from the cost savings generated will be returned by the new instrument. This makes it possible for the Government with the private sector buy more energy-efficient systems and improve the energy efficiency of their facilities without additional cost to the agency or the tax payers. This is an excerpt from EERE Network News, a weekly electronic newsletter.

The Energy Department announced on April 13 that up to $2.5 million will be available this year for applied research to advance clean biomass cookstove technologies for use in developing countries. The funding will support the development of innovative cookstove designs that allow users to burn wood or crop residues more efficiently and with less smoke than open fires and traditional stoves. DOE, along with other federal agencies, is a founding partner of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, a public-private partnership to advance cookstove technologies that improve indoor air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and deliver important benefits for developing nations around the world.

The World Health Organization cites indoor smoke from cooking and heating as one of the top 10 threats to public health in developing countries, contributing to nearly two million deaths each year. Clean cookstoves with reduced emissions and increased energy efficiency will help prevent some of these deaths caused by smoke exposure. Energy-efficient cookstoves also reduce fuel use, slow deforestation, and reduce the time families have to spend collecting fuel.

The Energy Department encourages organizations including small businesses, non-profits, universities, and national laboratories, to submit proposals for applied research and development grants to develop clean and efficient cookstoves. To help ensure the technologies developed will be usable and adopted, the research and development work will be based on assessments of user needs, and prototypes will be tested in the laboratory and in the field. DOE is also interested in supporting the development of a software tool that integrates research findings to help stove designers and manufacturers improve a wide range of cookstoves. The biomass research and development initiative will help, economically and environmentally sustainable sources of energy develop renewable biomass.
Credit card: Todd Johnson

The White House on 22 March announced an offer of up to $35 million products over three years to support research and development in advanced biofuels, bioenergy and high-value Biobased. The projects are financed by the biomass research and development initiative (BRDI), a joint programme of DOE and the U.S. Agriculture (USDA). The programs help economically and ecologically sustainable energy sources develop renewable biomass. Increasing the availability of renewable fuels and bio-based products that will help the need for petrol and diesel to replace can.

For the fiscal year 2012, applicant BRDI must propose funding, projects, the integration of science and research in three areas of technical engineering: feedstock, bio-fuels and organic products development, and biofuels development analysis. These technical areas are crucial to the continued success of the alternative bio-fuel production. Grants Awards and national program leadership for the BRDI program are managed by the USDA National Institute of food and Agriculture and the DOE Office of energy efficiency and renewable energy. Applications are by 24 April 2012, and must be submitted electronically. You will find on the DOE press release and the funding opportunity announcement FedConnect.

Study: More logging waste biomass expansion support

Monday, March 26, 2012
A new State study reported that Washington double forests enough supplies of waste wood by more than biomass energy production have nationwide. Area of the pulp and paper industry say that they need to study development costs further to see whether they can expand the production of biomass energy.

"There is tremendous opportunity on the landscape," State Commissioner of public lands Peter Goldmark said this week.

In 2010 dry loggers links bone 1.4 million tons of branches and other left remaining wood in slash pile, all biomass boilers could be used fire, according to the State Department of natural resources. Instead only 439.000-558.000 were used actually, tons to DNR.

The study, first of its kind nationwide only included biomass produced logging, not branched, which of course on the forest floor covered and provide nutrients for other trees Goldmark said.

The Agency plans to a calculator this year publish industry large biomass identify help deliver patches. Transport costs are one of the biggest factors when deciding where a biomass energy plant built, which is why developers look forested regions.

Officials at two of the State largest biomass of energy producers, Longview Fibre Paper and packaging, Inc. and Weyerhaeuser Co., say that the DNR study is good news for the industry. At the same time, they say they are not prepared to immediately the production of biomass energy ramp.

"If there is a way to use sustainable (and economic) more biomass, then that is good news." But I think everyone is fighting a way on the use of biomass in a way that is economically "said Weyerhaeuser spokesman Anthony Chavez, adding, that the company is still the DNR analysis study."

LongView fibre is trying to increase its renewable generation capacity of 54 MW of energy. The company plans that project dropped appeal in 2015 after three Puget Sound area environmental groups in December carry.

Company spokeswoman Pat case said Longview Fibre biomass used to help, makes the mill and sells excess energy. The company has no current plans expand, she said.

Both companies have black liquor (a by-product of the pulping process) and pig fuel (burned excess saw dust and wood chips) makes to their pulp mills.

Producing Clean, Renewable Diesel from Biomass

Saturday, December 10, 2011

This is an excerpt from EERE Network News, a weekly electronic newsletter.

By Paul Bryan, Biomass Program Manager, Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy

After a rigorous testing process, DOE project partners at ThermoChem Recovery International (TRI) have validated a process that converts wood waste and forest residue into clean, renewable fuel. Pilot validation is a key milestone for biofuels companies like TRI. With critical engineering data in hand and the testing phase complete, TRI can now begin the journey toward full-scale commercialization of a proven technology.

With the support of DOE funding, TRI has done substantial testing of a thermal gasification and gas-to-liquids process at its pilot plant in Durham, North Carolina. Through its operations, TRI has converted several hundred tons of 100% woody biomass feed stock into diesel fuel and paraffin waxes. TRI has collected over 1,000 hours of operational data that validate the process, while meeting or exceeding all of their operational and product yield targets.

This achievement will directly benefit two biorefinery projects in Wisconsin that are cost-shared by DOE: NewPage Corporation's biorefinery, "Project Independence," in Wisconsin Rapids and Flambeau River Papers biorefinery in Park Falls. TRI's data will help inform final engineering design of their future biorefineries. The gasification and gas-to-liquids technology will be integrated into their existing pulp and paper mills to produce clean, renewable, marketable diesel fuel and paraffin waxes, and will provide additional renewable energy by supplying steam and hot water to the co-located paper mill. EPA: New pollution limits will apply to some.

More than a dozen industry managed to escape, new federal controls on air pollution and the gases that warming blamed, after a top environmental protection agency officials told a Federal Court a long-delayed California powerhouse would have to follow the rules.

Two biomass plants, should help, San Joaquin Valley have clean air, with air pollution most of the State fines in recent history have been marked.

Global ampersands in Boston was more than $800,000 for ozone-related emissions premium and other injuries of biomass plants in Madera and Merced County, fine, federal authorities announced Tuesday.

Protection Agency say the fine of the largest in the San Joaquin Valley and California is in recent years, environmental officials in the US. Although they had not have concrete numbers, officials said fines of nearly $1 million are unusual in California.

Ampersand agreed, said the EPA fines for infringements which began in 2008 on the ampersand Chowchilla makes biomass in Madera County and Merced close to El Nido. Woody wastes burn biomass plants to build farms and cities to electricity.

Ampersand agreed to reduce ozone-forming nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide. Company could be unreachable for comment officials.

The large fine reflects the amount of pollution and the duration of injuries. The injuries took place during 2008, 2009 and 2010.

The San Joaquin Valley air pollution control district discovered problems.

Biomass plants are a cleaner way as open field burning agricultural has mostly been banned in the Valley.

Modern biomass plants must however satisfy strict standards to prevent addition to air quality problems, especially in the Valley.

Valley ozone pollution is one of the worst in the nation.

Ozone is a corrosive, warm weather gas, the scars that raises lung and asthma.

"That a victory for human health are today's enforcement actions," said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA Regional Administrator.

Ampersand was fined $328,000 for its plant Chowchilla and $492,000 for operation of Merced County.

The EPA and the district splits the punishment that is considered to be a rarity. EPA and local districts are often work on enforcement measures.

EPA share of money go to the US Treasury. The Valley Air District uses such sanctions programs help residents buy to finance electric lawnmower or cleaner wood stoves.

Ampersand was also an extra $15,000 to the Valley Air District for separate violations of district rules, including requirements for emissions control plans to pay.

Ampersand bought and renovated two biomass plants in 2007 and 2008 federal air officials said.

Operations had to shut down the Valley Air District during the 1990s.

The two plants aside from nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide injured limit values for sulphur dioxide. The two plants for timely tests to measure emissions, EPA, said.
