Military renewable energy: why more than money is at stake

Friday, August 31, 2012
In 2011, $5 billion for renewable energy spent the army. But why do care the army so much about renewable energy? The answer is simple: live and public money are on the line.

In times of war, soldiers risk their lives to protect of the convoys to deliver the fossil to the front. The army environment policy Institute found that about one U.S. soldier is killed, supply convoys to the front sent for every 24 fuel. More specifically, reported CNN Money, that "one from each of eight victims of the United States Army in the Iraq was the result to protect fuel convoys." The use of renewable energy sources, would easier for over water units on the other hand, caused the convoys both to reduce better risks and the total number of convoys. The AEPI study goes on to claim that "a 10% less fuel consumption over a five year period fuel-related supplies could cause losses to a reduction of 35 during the same period." This is obviously a desired result.

A more amazing statistic is that there are currently seven liters of fuel only to a gallon in U.S. supply lines to transport. The worst is, that a large part of this fuel is used, makes the U.S. forward bases itself. The use of renewable energy sources on this basis would required reduced the number of convoys to transport energy, which would be ultimately much more convenient for the Government.

As soon as you see these numbers, it is easy to see why the US Department of Defense invested $3 billion in renewable energy in 2013. You open also 16 million hectares of land for renewable energy development. The Ministry of defence of the United States invested also heavily to establish operational bases that are self supporting and intelligent in the distribution of power in Microgrids forward to integrate renewable energy at the forefront. By renewable energy and Microgrids, the Ministry of defence of the United States to help reduce the human and financial costs of fossil fuels for the U.S. military plans to deliver. The Ministry of defence of the United States hopes to win even one more free moving fighting force because not so many soldiers, bind to the convoys.

It took really decrease the DoD participation in projects such as computer, Internet and mobile networks for them. I'm curious to see how the DoD investment in renewable energy and Microgrids pushes these industries into a new era. How do you think that the DoD investments will pan? Will this have a major impact on the industry of renewable energy and Microgrids?

How Schools Can Use Less Energy & Spend Less Money without the Sacrifice

Tuesday, July 24, 2012
Making schools energy efficient need not be an exercise in sacrifice. Schools can get the same or better services, as well as increase the health and comfort of students and staff, all while using less energy.

The first step is to get an energy assessment that can help identify and prioritize opportunities for substantial energy and operational savings. Once these opportunities are identified, a school can develop a customized plan to reduce energy use, replacement and operating costs, and their carbon footprint. Common energy-saving measures for schools include installing high-efficiency lighting and lighting controls; heating, cooling and ventilation equipment; and motors, controls and variable frequency drives.

Incentives from government and/or utility-based programs may be available to help pay for the cost of an energy audit and/or energy efficiency upgrades. These rebates and incentives help schools lower the capital investment required to implement energy-saving strategies and technologies, as well as provide an attractive return on investment and payback due to savings on maintenance and energy costs.

In New York City and Westchester County, for example, schools with a Con Edison electric or natural gas account may be eligible for the following incentives from Con Edison’s Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency Program:

Payment of up to 50 percent of costs, with a cap of $67,000, for a Level 3 energy auditRebates for high-efficiency electric and gas equipment including lighting fixtures and LED exit signs, packaged heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, motors, chillers, and water and steam boilersPerformance-based custom incentives for installing high-efficiency equipment or energy-saving solutions not eligible for equipment rebates
Check to see what funding may be available in your area.

Save energy and money with aerogel insulation

Wednesday, June 13, 2012
Leo Christodoulou, PhD, Program Manager, advanced Office production

Most of us are familiar with the classic thermos bottle. The bottle holds hot liquids hot his vacuum insulation material - but without good insulation, the heat from the fluid is wasted.

As well as in a much larger scale, about 950 trillion BTU (British thermal units) of thermal energy the bad insulation of pipes, valves, fall and components from industrial steam distribution systems is lost every year because every year. This is almost a percent of domestic energy consumption - the equivalent of 165 million barrels of crude oil, or something more than wasting 7,500 million gallons of gasoline.

Within the framework of the all of the-over strategy of President America to solve clean energy challenges is investing in an innovative material, which saves energy and money for industrial plants and also help 50 full time the Department of energy to support clean energy jobs for Americans.

With the help of the Department of energy advanced manufacturing created Aspen Aerogels Pyrogel Office and Cryogel, insulation products, the aerogel insulation to use technology. Aerogel insulation and saves energy and money due to the structure - solids that make up only three percent of its total volume, it consists of light silica. The remaining 97% of the insulation consists of air in the form of extremely small pores. Because the air has to move very little room, it effectively captures the heat - save energy and money. Saving Money and Fuel with a Click of a Mouse

Sunday, January 22, 2012

By Patrick B. Davis Vehicle Technologies Program Manager

On January 9, as I walked along the floor of the North American International Auto Show, I found myself continually taken with the variety of vehicles and technologies on display. It seems like there's a vehicle configuration for every segment of consumer these days. That level of choice can also be daunting. With so many options, it can be hard to decipher what car is right for you, or if there's a clear economic benefit in trading up to a new vehicle. Fortunately, DOE offers a number of tools that can help consumers save money and fuel, whether you're in the market for a new vehicle or trying to make the most of your current one.

FuelEconomy.gov, a partnership between the DOE and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is a great place to start. The site's recently updated Find-a-Car tool helps consumers find a fuel-efficient vehicle that meets their specific set of needs. Buyers can browse by model, class, price, or miles per gallon. The entry on each car shows the vehicle's annual fuel cost, fuel economy, amount of petroleum used, smog score, and safety ratings. Drivers can also compare up to four different cars side-by-side. There's even a mobile version so that car shoppers compare models as they browse the lot.

Once a driver has chosen a vehicle, he or she can find out its full lifetime cost on the Alternative Fuel and Advanced Vehicles Data Center's (AFDC) Vehicle Cost Calculator. After averaging in the driver's local gas prices, daily driving distance, and annual mileage, the calculator gives a cumulative cost of ownership that includes fuel, tires, maintenance, and loan payments. The Vehicle Cost Calculator also provides information on a vehicle's lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. This calculation includes not only the tailpipe emissions but also emissions created in fuel production, whether the fuel is gasoline, electricity, or biofuels. Bar and line graphs for each result make it simple to compare different vehicles to one another. Read the full story on DOE's Energy Blog.

At pump was the year of the big squeeze 2011

At pump was the year of the big squeeze 2011

NEW YORK — 30 years since gasoline has such a big bite from budget of families.

If the gifts from Grandma are unloaded and holidays is over, the typical American household is $4.155 a record fills up this year have issued. This is 8.4 per cent of which average family finds in the highest proportion since 1981.

Gas another deplorable record on average more than $3.50 per gallon this year. And next year not likely facilitate to bring.

In the past high gas prices in the United States hand in hand went with good economic times, making them less harmful to family finances. Now, despite slow economic growth and weak demand prices are high.

This is because demand for crude oil rises worldwide, especially in the developing countries of Asia and Latin America. But it puts the squeeze on the United States, where unemployment is high and many people that are jobs not always throws.

The case has caught Michael Reed at Charlotte, n.c. He was unable to find work since he lost his support for computer work in 2009. Now, high gas prices ask about what he has left. He and his wife will not exchange gifts this Christmas.

"I try to take as little as possible so that it not as a piece of my wallet," he says.

1981, As the economy slipped into recession and oil prices were high because of the Middle East turmoil, gas by 8.8 percent, from which says typical family budget Fred Rozell ate from the oil price information service.

In the last decade, gas has recorded 5.7 percent of budget of families. If only 5.7 percent spending families this year, it would have saved $1,300.

Gas should be $3.53 per gallon average for this year. Thats 76 cent more than in the last year. It is 29 cents per gallon more than 2008, if gas most recently record an annual, set $3.24. In the same year the price of oil a record in the summer but reduces the financial crisis in the fall hit.

In addition to families, leaving less money for food and go through to the cinema, tribute high gas prices a disproportionate on consumer confidence. People are better about small changes of in gas prices, because they drive past the signs of all time.

And the money on gas has spent less bang in the economy than, say, a dollar spent at a restaurant. The United States an oil is investing in new companies and jobs importing country, so many of the dollars expended leave the country instead, here gas finally.

James Hamilton, Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, that energy prices studies, estimates that high gasoline prices growth of about 0.5 percent for the year reduced - a major hit for an economy grow only at an annual rate of around 2 percent.

Still, it could be worse. The US economy is much more fuel-saving, as it was during the oil spikes from the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1980 $1,000 were used for each performance, 1.07 barrels of oil. It took until the year 2010 the - 0.53 barrels, says half, Judith Dwarkin, Chief Energy Economist at ITG investment research.

Today, almost no oil uses the United States to generate electricity. The proportion of households with heating oil fell. And vehicles are less than ever thirsty - 20 percent more fuel efficient than later in the year 1980.

In addition the low price of natural gas has kept low heating and electricity costs for the same households give more money on gas.

Relief from high gas prices is nowhere in sight, though. Ed Morse, head of research were expected $100 a barrel with Citibank, oil next year, on average, that 2011 would eclipse the average of about $95 a barrel.

Tom Kloza, Chief oil analyst at OPIS, expected approach the gasoline prices to $4 per gallon again next spring.

Drivers keep gas guzzlers in the driveway, combine trips and more efficient cars to buy. Compared with the previous year, American gas consumption was that every week more than nine months, according to MasterCard SpendingPulse, a spending survey.

But this helps only so much. Hunter Collins, a software support engineer lives in Richmond, Maine, commute 40 miles each way to his job in Falmouth. He began to work van-pooling if it in turn is to drive more fuel-efficient car with a colleague and his wife.

It is still not enough. He says that he goes to his beloved cylinder Dodge Charger sell. "She's my baby, but I'll have to go to SI"
